My Thoughts on Billboard Chart History September 4, 1982
Sep 4, 1982 marked the start of the school year. The Mall always slowed down after Labor day.
So the month of September was always used to prepare my planning for the upcoming Christmas season.
Camelot would always expect our planned orders for November-December on certain expected well selling items.
Not the music lps, cassettes eight tracks etc., but on Accessory items such as tape carrying cases, VHS and Beta Tape supplies, etc.
They also would send out to us managers a Christmas music Album and Cassette tape list.
We would have the opportunity to add to the quantities they planned on sending us.
We often received the Christmas music supplies by the end of September.
Then I could plan for where I would be displaying them for sales during the Christmas season.
Our daughter was 2 years old. We arranged our schedules to work opposite each other so she could attend college.
Other Thoughts
In September we were following my favorite baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles.
They were in a pennant race in the AL East and in the middle of a 10‑game win streak that continued into Oct.
They ultimately lost the chance to advance to the playoffs to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Our Christmas (Fourth Quarter Meetings ) For Managers and District Supervisors was held in Pittsburgh, Pa. In October of 1982.
Billboard Top 100 Singles
Hit singles Billboard's Top 100, for Sep 4, 1982:
- “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor (written by Jim Peterik, who also wrote “Vehicle” for Ides of March and songs for 38 Special).
The song was featured in the Rocky III movie, which was released in May of 1982.
-“You Should Hear How She Talks About You” by Melissa Manchester.
- “You Can Do Magic” by America (their last top‑10 single).
- “I Ran” by A Flock of Seagulls.
- “Gloria” by Laura Branigan (the peak of her career; she died in the early 2000s, much too young).
- “Mickey” by Toni Basil (the song that broke the week of Sep 4, 1982).
Albums that stood out that month:
- *American Fool* by John Cougar.
- *Asia* by Asia (debut album, still doing well on the charts).
- *Daylight Again* by Crosby, Stills & Nash (features “Wasted on the Way,” “Southern Cross,” and “Into the Darkness”).
Interesting last note: Compact Disc had just launched overseas and was barely discussed yet in-store.
So that’s it for Sep 4, 1982.
