FROM THE RECORD STORE FLOOR
Camelot Music – Eastview Mall
In September 1982, I was working at Camelot Music in Eastview Mall.
American Fool was everywhere. We had a front counter display with cardboard stand-ups.
The label pushed it hard. Radio would not stop playing “Jack & Diane.”
Customers came in asking for it by name. The teens bought the cassette.
Adults bought vinyl. 8-track was fading but still around.
Compact Disc had just launched in late 1982, but we did not yet stock this title on CD.
MTV played “Hurts So Good.” That helped drive younger buyers.
We also sold VHS music video compilations. Artists like Duran Duran would soon explode in that format.
You could feel the shift happening. Rock was visual now.
